The founder of the Guardian Angels outlined the schedule for his visit to the Poconos on Sunday.Curtis Sliwa's tour of the area will begin at noon, when he will arrive at the gates of A Pocono Country Place in Tobyhanna. He is expected to distribute literature outside the main entrance of the development. His next stop will be at the Stroud Mall on Route 611, followed by Wal-Mart in East Stroudsburg.
The two commercial locations were chosen because they are heavily trafficked, Sliwa said. The visit, which Sliwa said is intended to gauge local interest in forming a chapter of his public safety organization, will wrap up at the Pine Ridge development in Lehman Township. Both Pine Ridge and A Pocono Country Place were mentioned as centers of gang activity in an Associated Press story that appeared earlier this week. Police in the story described an unknown number of gang members moving to the Poconos.
Sliwa said Wednesday that his group was invited to the Poconos by nearly 20 concerned residents. He characterized them as transplants from New York, who left the city looking for a better life, but spotted signs of gang activity in their new community."We're not going to tolerate city problems coming to the Poconos," Sliwa said. "They're drawing the line in the sand."-- Dan Berrett
